Middletown, NY- The SUNY Orange men's team dropped a close 1-0 decision to Monroe University-Bronx in their season opener on Tuesday afternoon. The Colts moved to 0-1 while the Express improved to 1-1.
A strong defensive effort from the Colts kept the Express off the scoreboard in the first half, allowing no goals despite facing 12 shots and six corner kicks.
The Express scored their lone goal in the 78th minute as Brando Tuda headed in a free kick from Juan Ramirez.
Monroe was unable to capitalize on a late opportunity as sophomore Jonathan Velasquez (Middletown, NY/Middletown) was able to track back on defense and block a shot on an otherwise open net.
The Colts best scoring opportunity came in the 66th minute as sophomore Ricardo Arias (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) put a shot on goal and collected the rebound for another but missed wide.
Arias led the Colts offensively with three shots and two shots on goal. Freshman Dominic Vega (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) made 10 saves on 11 shots on goal in his debut for the Colts.
Next up, the Colts are on the road on Thursday, September 11 against Ulster County Community College. The game is scheduled to begin at 4PM.
